Polyethylene is made from petroleum raw materials known as hydrocarbons. The raw materials and polyethylene are both made of hydrogen and carbon (hydrocarbons). In North America, the raw materials are usually natural gas.

A study in Germany shows that if there were no plastic materials, 400% of other materials would be needed to produce the required packaging, and in addition, the volume of these packages would more than double. Another European study shows that in the absence of plastics, 14.2 million tonnes of oil would be needed and 47.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide would be emitted annually. Although the process of optimizing packaging continues, the main plan to improve the efficiency of plastic packaging is to move the product in line with existing expectations at a low price.
